Darwin to Adelaide: planning the east coast loop

This is the planning page for my next long trip: Darwin to Sydney, then Canberra, the Snowy Mountains, Melbourne, Adelaide, and back to Darwin. I want this story to grow in public while the trip is happening, so this page will hold the route plan first and then become a live timeline of updates, decisions, photos, small lessons, and the real shape of the road.

Dates are confirmed. The loop runs 18-27 September 2026:

Darwin -> Sydney - 18 Sep (flight)
Sydney -> Canberra - 20 Sep (drive)
Canberra -> Snowy Mountains - 22 Sep (drive)
Snowy Mountains -> Melbourne - 24 Sep (drive)
Melbourne -> Adelaide - 26 Sep (drive)
Adelaide -> Darwin - 27 Sep (flight home)

The idea is to move from the Top End into the east coast rhythm, then cut through the capital and mountain country before finishing through Melbourne and Adelaide, then a flight back to close the loop.

Why this trip

I want a trip that feels bigger than a holiday. It should be a reset, a story, and a moving workspace. I want to capture how each city changes my thinking: the pace of Sydney, the focus of Canberra, the scale of the Snowy Mountains, the creative energy of Melbourne, and the slower finish into Adelaide.

This page is not meant to be a polished travel guide. It is a live log. Some updates will be practical. Some will be reflective. Some will be quick notes from the road that become useful later.

Planning from Darwin

Departing 18 September 2026.

Current status: planning the route, checking timing, and deciding what each stop is supposed to do for the trip.

Darwin is the starting point, so the first job is to prepare properly: travel dates, packing, work setup, budget, transport, and the rough shape of the story I want to document.

Sydney

Arriving 18 September 2026, flight from Darwin.

Sydney is the first major stop. I want this part to capture the transition from planning into movement: arrival, first impressions, food, city pace, and what the trip feels like once it becomes real.

Canberra

Arriving 20 September 2026, driving from Sydney.

Canberra will be a quieter section. I want to use it for reflection, museums, policy spaces, architecture, and a different kind of Australian city rhythm.

Snowy Mountains

Arriving 22 September 2026, driving from Canberra.

The Snowy Mountains should become the visual and emotional peak of the trip. This section will be about landscape, weather, roads, and the feeling of being somewhere that changes the scale of everything.

Melbourne

Arriving 24 September 2026, driving from the Snowy Mountains.

Melbourne is for people, culture, food, ideas, and creative energy. I want to capture the city as a place to think, meet, walk, and reset before the final stretch.

Adelaide

Arriving 26 September 2026, driving from Melbourne.

Adelaide is the closing chapter. I want this part to slow down and make sense of the whole route: what changed, what worked, what I would do differently, and what story the trip actually became.
